THE D.I.Y. Herb (Carton) Garden
7 easy steps to repurposing your paper cartons
Eating more fresh foods is part of any healthy lifestyle. Why not combine your search for fresh foods with eco-friendly practices? We know those little herb garden kits are adorable, but pricey! And honestly, does the parsley really taste better in matching terra-cotta planters? Don’t worry: we’ve got a way to help you save money and practice an eco-friendly lifestyle while letting you enjoy fresh herbs all year.
First stop—the grocery store. Pick up a carton of milk or juice. We know you choose cartons (right?), which are fantastic at keeping your beverages fresh by preserving taste, vitamins and other nutrients. They are also a great eco-friendly packaging choice, since they’re made from paper, which comes from a renewable resource—trees!
After you’re done enjoying your beverage, repurpose your empty milk or juice paper carton to start an indoor herb garden. (P.S. This is a GREAT project to do with kids! Rainy-day craft time, anyone?)
To make your own indoor carton planters for fresh herbs year-round, follow these simple steps:
Step 1: Once you are finished with your half-gallon milk or juice carton, rinse it and let it dry for 24 hours. Plan to use one carton for each herb you’d like to grow in your kitchen herb garden. Fresh herbs such as basil, chives, thyme, parsley, mint and rosemary can successfully grow in your carton planters.
Step 2: Cut the carton in half using a knife, and slit drainage holes in the top half of the carton.
Step 3: Turn the top half of the carton upside down, and place it in the bottom half of the carton. The bottom half of the carton will catch extra water that runs through during watering.
Step 4: Decorate your new carton planter. Easy decorating ideas include wrapping with decorative adhesive craft paper, or getting creative with ribbon, rhinestones or lace.
Step 5: Fill your carton planter with soil.
Step 6: You are ready to plant your favorite herbs! Use one carton per plant, and don’t forget to add a label.
Step 7: Place your new planter in a sunny window, water, and enjoy fresh herbs at your fingertips all year!
